Les membres des Êtats portent des cartes bilîngues en Anglais et Jèrriais achteu. J’sommes à attendre chein qu’l’s Êtats éthont a dithe entouor la proposition dé Jeremy Maçon qu’les départéments d’s Êtats faichent pus d’promotion d’la langue Jèrriaise. L’Académie d’la langue rencontrit pouor la preunmié fais chutte s’maine et la tâche dé standardisé la langue a c’menchi. Quand j’éthons un standard, l’êtchipe pouôrra asseûther un ensîngnage pus consistent et j’pouôrrons dêv’lopper eune qualificâtion. J’avons lanchi chutte s’maine eune campangne ès médias sociaux. La calenge, vîngt en deux mille dgiêx-neuf d’mande qué les gens en Jèrri apprengent vîngt phrâses en Jèrriais duthant l’année. Ches phrâses s’sont publié dans l’magâsîn Rural et la Gâzette du Sé. Ous pouôrrez ouï les phrâses sus l’radio BBC etout.
Les tchoeurs ès êcoles partoute l’Île chant’tonts ch’t’ année en Jèrriais duthant lé concért Jersey Sings. I’ y’étha etout du Jèrriais dans les célébrâtions d’la Libéthâtion. J’sommes touos engagis dans la même litte et j’avons un tas à nos entr’-offri et nos entr’-apprendre.

Hello everyone it is Marianne Sargent here with la lettre Jèrriaise and an update on how the Jèrriais programme is going. Since my last letter the Jèrriais Advisory Group has made further progress in the effort to make the language more visible around the Island. States members now carry with them bilingual English/Jèrriais cards and we await the response to Jeremy Maçon’s proposition that Jèrriais be more widely promoted by the Public Sector. We continue to work on the new strategic plan for the future of the language with the long-term aim of creating a new generation of fluent Jèrriais speakers.
The language academy met for the first time this week and the important task of standardising the language has begun. Once we have a standard the teaching team will be able to take a more consistent approach to teaching the language and work can start on developing a qualification, which will make learning Jèrriais more attractive to children in secondary schools. The adult education programme continues to expand with classes now available during lunchtimes and evenings at beginner and intermediate levels. There are now also two more opportunities to practise speaking Jèrriais in a social setting during the week. As well as the weekly conversation at Expressions café in Jersey Museum at 10.30am every Thursday morning, speakers meet at St Martin’s village tearoom on Wednesday mornings and Jersey Pearl café in St Ouen on Friday mornings. We also continue to reach out to a younger audience with a new story and rhyme time for pre-school children and their parents at First Tower nursery.
This year is the International Year of Indigenous Languages and the team will be taking full advantage of this opportunity to promote Jèrriais both within the Island and as part of the wider minority language community. Our year-long social media campaign kicked off this week. The 20 in 2019 challenge asks Islanders to learn 20 Jèrriais phrases over the course of the year. These phrases will be published in Rural magazine as well as the JEP and publicised on BBC Radio.
Whole-school choirs from across the Island will be singing in our native tongue during this year’s Jersey Sings concert. Jèrriais will also be featuring in the forthcoming Liberation Day celebrations and we also look forward to the return of our annual festival, La Fête du Jèrriais, which will be taking place in the Spring. Furthermore, we are excited to say that the Jersey Reds rugby team match day digital programme will contain Jèrriais translation in future, and this will be accompanied by the Cornish language for their match against the Cornish Pirates next week. This is particularly apt for celebrating the International Year of Indigenous Languages. The Jèrriais team is keen to build relationships with our minority language counterparts in the spirit of community and co-operation. We are all fighting the same fight and have much to offer and learn from one another.
