Bouônjour bouonne gens, ch’est Marianne Sargent ichîn auve la lettre Jèrriaise chutte s’maine. La s’maine pâssée ‘tait la preunmié Fête du Jèrriais, sponsorisée par la bouonne compangnie Jèrriaise Rom’thi. J’célébrînmes not’ langue auve la chanson, la danse, la musique, la poésie, lé film et la convèrsâtion, arrouôsé auve un gout d’cidre. J’nos rencontrînmes auve l’s anmîns et l’s êtudgiants d’Jèrriais épis y’avait des nouvelles faches, Jérriaises et d’aut’ bord. Y’avait etout nos collègues dé Héthitage dé Dgèrnésy. Lé Chef Ministre dit tchique chose en Jèrriais, j’eûnmes eune convèrsâtion auve lé Député Kevin Pamplin et la Professeuthe Mari Jones et j’chantînmes auve Badlabecques. Ch’tait eune mangnifique s’maine et ouaithe qué j’sais bein lâssée achteu, jé m’sens hardi positive entouor l’av’nîn d’la langue Jèrriaise.
J’avons fait un tas duthant les dreines deux années. Lé neu progranme dans l’s êcoles a c’menchi et j’sommes à ensîngni dans onze êcoles primaithes et chîntch’ êcoles s’gondaithes. L’s êfants sont hardi întérêssi et j’ai des grandes clâsses auve jusqu’à vîngt êtudgiants. Additionnellement, i’ y’a des nouvieaux êtudgiants à v’nîn ès clâsses pouor l’s adultes. L’s êtudgiants peuvent chouâisis entre eune neu clâsse duthant l’heuthe dé dinner à la bibliothèque en Ville ou eune clâsse duthant lé sé au Centre Ph’lippe Mouothant à la Trinneté.
La publyicâtion dé ‘J’allons à la chasse à l’ourse’, la traduction du livre en portraits ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ par Michael Rosen, avait ‘té populaithe et l’Office du Jèrriais a r’chu un tas des c’mandes. Malheutheusement, les livres sont acouo à bord d’un baté dans l’mitan d’la mé! Mais quand les livres arriv’thont touos l’s êfants dans l’année reception dans l’s êcoles primaithes en Jèrri en r'chévthont iun pouor rein. Mèrcie bein des fais au Don Balleine Trust pouor ch’na.
La lanch’chie du livre Dînmanche pâssée duthant La Fête des Patholes ‘tait vendue hors et j’têmes fièrs dé l’liéthe pouor la preunmié fais. Lé célébrâtion continnue à la mênag’gie d’Jèrri (Jersey Zoo) chu weekend, quand des fanmil’yes sont învitées pouor chasser l’ourse, et acouo Sanm’di tchi veint, lé treize d’Octobre à la bibliothèque en Ville pouor l’èrcont’tie d’histouaithes et d’s activités d’art.
J’attendons fête la Section du Jèrriais d’l’Eisteddfod tchi prends pliaiche lé vîngt-trais et lé vîngt-quat’ d’Novembre. Les deux nouvelles clâsses, Présentâtion Dramatique et Chant’tie en tchoeu sont hardi populaithes et i’ y’a un tas d’entrées. Don la section ès mousses s’en va prendre lé jour entchi, dé neuf heuthes du matîn jusqu’a trais heuthes et d’mie l’arlévée. Viyant qu’ lé service d’ensîngnage n’a pon ‘té acouo întroduit dans toutes l’s êcoles, tout coumme l’av’nîn d’la Section pathait bein encouothageant.
Lé Jèrriais Advisory Group fut graie ch’t’ année et j’sommes à travailli ensembl’ye pouor dêvelopper un plian auve des strategies pouor l’av’nîn d’la langue. Àcanté des progranmes d’êducâtion dans l’s êcoles et pouor l’s adultes, j’voudrons vaie lé Jèrriais partout Jèrri et encouothagi s’n usâge sociale. J’aim’thêmes avanchi l’Jèrriais comme eune langue vivante et rêjouie et asseûther qu’ou continnue à dêv’lopper et craître.

Hello everyone it is Marianne Sargent here with la lettre Jèrriaise. Last week was the first ever Fête du Jèrriais, sponsored by Romerils. We celebrated our native language through song, dance, music, poetry, film and conversation topped off with a drop of cider. We met with friends and students of Jèrriais and welcomed new faces, both local and visiting the Island, including our colleagues from Guernsey Heritage. We got the Chief Minister to ‘say something in Jèrriais’, were engaged in conversation with Deputy Kevin Pamplin and Professor Mari Jones and had a sing-a-long with the Badlabecques. It was a truly fantastic week, and although I feel so very tired right now, I feel a tremendous a sense of optimism about the future of Jèrriais and what we can achieve.
We have already come such a long way in the past two years. The new teaching programme is up and running and we are offering Jèrriais lessons in 11 primary schools and five secondary schools. The response to these lessons has been extremely positive with group sizes of up to 20 pupils. In addition, the new adult programme is attracting new learners, who now have a choice between joining a new beginners’ lunchtime class at Jersey Library or an evening class at the Philip Mourant Centre in Trinity.
The publication of ‘J’allons à la chasse à l’ourse’, the Jèrriais translation of Michael Rosen’s popular picture book, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, has been particularly well received, with orders piling up while we await its delayed arrival. Thanks to Le Don Balleine Trust every child in reception across Jersey’s schools will receive a free copy before Christmas. The book launch, which took place last Sunday as part of Jersey Festival of Words, was a sell out and we were so proud to share it with an audience for the first time. The celebration continues at Jersey Zoo this weekend, when families are invited to come along and get involved in a real bear hunt, as well as next Saturday the 13th October at Jersey Library, with more storytelling and craft activities.
We are very much looking forward to the upcoming Jèrriais Section of the Jersey Eisteddfod, which takes place on the 23rd and 24th November. The introduction of two new classes, Dramatic Presentation and Choral Singing, has increased interest and we have so many entrants this year that we have had to extend the children’s section of the Festival to fill a whole day. Bearing in mind that the teaching service has not yet expanded into all schools, the future for the Section is looking very encouraging.
The establishment of the Jèrriais Advisory Group earlier this year is helping to ensure that we work together with interested parties to develop a strategic plan for the future of the language. As well as working to increase the number of speakers through our schools and adult education programmes, we also aim to increase the visibility of Jèrriais and increase its social use. We also aim to promote Jèrriais as a vibrant, living language and ensure that it continues to evolve and grow.
